Junk World

Spending years working alone in his apartment, one filmmaker built an entire stop-motion world out of junk, and the result is one of the most visually stunning animated films you'll ever see. Junk World is the sequel movie to Junk Head, both created almost entirely by Takahide Hori — writing, directing, animating, voice acting, the whole thing. Set over a thousand years before the first film, it follows Captain Tris, a human woman, and Dante, a clone of the artificial lifeforms called Mulligans, as they lead a small team into an underground city to investigate strange anomalies. Humanity at this point has figured out how to live practically forever but can't reproduce anymore, so they engineered the Mulligans as a labor force — who, naturally, rebelled and built their own civilization beneath the surface. Down in the subterranean city of Carp Bar, the team runs into a fanatical cult called the Gyula, and things go sideways fast. The tone is this weird, perfect balance of dark comedy and genuine tension, all wrapped in handcrafted stop-motion that feels alive in a way CG rarely does. Every frame has this grimy, tactile quality that pulls you in. If you liked the surreal nightmare energy of Mad God or the alien world-building of The Dark Crystal and Fantastic Planet, this is right in that lane. It's a singular artistic vision brought to life one frame at a time, and there's really nothing else like it.
