Kaatan is mischievous, unpredictable, and completely indifferent to whatever the book recommends, and watching Watashi fumble through the basics of mythical-creature ownership is where the comedy lives. Each episode runs about three minutes, so this is the kind of TV series you put on between things — low commitment, quick laughs, done. The animation is minimalist, which actually works in its favor; the humor comes from the situations, not visual spectacle. If you liked Chi's Sweet Home for its slice-of-life pet chaos, or Higepiyo for its short-form absurdity, this fits comfortably in that space. There's also a faint Sarazanmai energy in how it plays with kappa mythology while keeping everything grounded in mundane domestic life. It's a 2004 oddity that not many people have seen, based on a manga, produced by Picture Magic.
