📖 SYNOPSIS
Living in the shadow of Meiji-era Japan's rigid expectations, Satoko Kirigaya — a noblewoman of grace and prestige — harbors a secret: a heart condition she's been hiding from every suitor who's come knocking. And there have been a lot of them. She's beautiful, graceful, from a prestigious family, the whole package. But she keeps turning them all down because she doesn't want to burden anyone with the truth. Then one day she gets kidnapped by mercenaries, and the guy assigned to kill her is Shinpei Gotou, a legendary assassin who is very much not in the marriage market. Satoko's solution to not getting murdered? She proposes to him. That's the setup, and honestly it's such a wild premise that I had to keep reading. What makes it work is the tension between these two — she's calculating and composed despite being terrified, and he's a killer who doesn't know what to do with someone who won't just die quietly. It's set against this richly detailed Meiji backdrop where societal expectations and duty weigh on everything. The romance builds slow, grounded in survival first and feelings second. If you liked the bittersweet atmosphere of Hotarubi no Mori e or the way A Condition Called Love handles vulnerability in relationships, this hits similar notes but with way more danger baked into every interaction. David Production is handling it, and the historical setting should play to their strengths. Worth keeping on your radar for 2026.
