Synopsis

On the surface, Yukino Miyazawa is the perfect student — top grades, great at sports, loved by everyone. She's also completely full of it. Behind closed doors, she's a vain, praise-obsessed perfectionist who carefully engineers every aspect of her public image. Then Souichirou Arima shows up, effortlessly beats her in exams, and steals all the attention she's been working so hard to hoard. What starts as petty rivalry turns into something else entirely when both of them realize they're hiding behind the same kind of mask. This 26-episode TV series is really about two people slowly peeling back their carefully constructed facades and figuring out who they actually are underneath — and whether they can be honest with each other when they've spent their whole lives performing for everyone else. The comedy hits hard early on, with Yukino's internal monologues about her vanity being genuinely funny, but the show gradually shifts into more emotional territory as the relationship deepens and both characters confront real insecurities. It's directed by Hideaki Anno, and you can feel his fingerprints all over it — experimental cuts, real photo inserts, sudden tonal shifts that somehow work. If you liked the emotional honesty of Toradora or the comedy-to-drama balance in Lovely Complex, this one covers similar ground but with a more psychological edge. It's from 1998 and based on a shoujo manga, so the art style is very much of its era, but the character writing holds up.
