Maid in Hanaukyo
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Inheriting his grandfather's enormous estate comes with a catch for Taro Hanaukyo — hundreds of dedicated maids who treat him like royalty whether he wants it or not. This 3-episode OVA from 2001 picks up where the main series left off, dropping you into Taro's increasingly chaotic domestic life without much preamble. The focus here is on character moments rather than big plot: one episode digs into Cynthia, a maid who shifts between two distinct personalities, and watching Taro try to navigate that without making things worse is genuinely endearing. Another episode throws him into training sessions with Konoe, his no-nonsense bodyguard, and the third goes somewhere unexpected when a fellow maid talks him into spending an entire day cross-dressing as one of the staff. That last one is where the comedy lands hardest. The tone throughout is light and a little silly — this is comfort-food anime from the early 2000s harem era, not something trying to reinvent the genre. If you enjoyed Love Hina or He is My Master, the setup here will feel familiar, though Hanaukyou Maid-tai leans harder into the absurdity of the premise. It also shares some DNA with Mahoromatic in terms of that specific blend of service-comedy and oddly earnest character beats. It is short, it does not overstay its welcome, and it captures a very specific nostalgic flavor of early 2000s shounen comedy that fans of the era tend to appreciate.
