📖 SYNOPSIS

"Hanasaka Jijii" tells the story of an elderly, childless couple who cherish their dog. The dog's digging reveals a box of gold, attracting the attention of a greedy neighbor. The neighbor borrows the dog, hoping for similar fortune, but instead, the dog is killed. Grieving, the couple buries the dog, and later, the dog's spirit guides them to create a magical mortar that turns rice into gold. The neighbor attempts to replicate their success, but his efforts backfire, leading to the destruction of the mortar and his own downfall. The dog's spirit then instructs the couple to use the ashes of the mortar to make cherry trees bloom, earning them the admiration and gifts of a Daimyo. The neighbor's attempt to copy this results in his imprisonment and exile. The story explores themes of kindness, greed, and the consequences of one's actions.
