Hana Yori Dango

A working-class girl named Tsukushi Makino is just trying to survive two more years at a school full of rich kids who couldn't care less about her existence. That plan falls apart the moment she stands up to the F4 — four absurdly wealthy guys who basically run the school — and earns herself a red card, which is their way of telling every student to make her life miserable. The thing is, Tsukushi doesn't break. She fights back, and that's where everything gets complicated. Tsukasa Domyoji, the loud, aggressive leader of the F4, can't figure out why this girl won't submit. Meanwhile, Tsukushi finds herself drawn to the quieter Rui Hanazawa, who seems like a completely different person from the rest of the group. What starts as a class warfare story slowly turns into a messy, emotionally charged love polygon where nobody's feelings line up neatly. This 51-episode TV series from 1996 is the OG shoujo romance that influenced a ton of what came after — if you liked the rich-kid dynamics in Ouran High School Host Club or the slow-burn emotional tension of Kimi ni Todoke, this is where a lot of that DNA comes from. It's also got some of the rawness you find in Toradora, where the romance doesn't shy away from conflict. The pacing can feel very 90s at times, but the character development, especially within the F4, earns every episode. It's a drama about pride, stubbornness, and falling for people who challenge you.
