📖 SYNOPSIS
Born into a samurai family, Ryuunosuke Ibuki wants nothing to do with samurai. Which is a problem, because now he's stuck working as the personal errand boy for one of the most dangerous men in Kyoto. After getting beaten and robbed on the road, Ryuunosuke is "rescued" by Kamo Serizawa — a charismatic, volatile leader of the Rōshigumi, the group that would eventually become the legendary Shinsengumi. Being Serizawa's assistant is less a second chance and more like being a dog on a very short leash. But as Ryuunosuke gets pulled deeper into the political chaos of the Bakumatsu era, rubbing shoulders with figures like Hijikata, Okita, and Saitō, his black-and-white view of the samurai world starts cracking. This 12-episode TV series is actually a prequel to the main Hakuouki storyline, and it works surprisingly well on its own. The focus here is on the messy, morally gray origins of the Shinsengumi — the power struggles, the loyalty tests, the question of what honor actually means when everything around you is falling apart. Studio Deen keeps the tone grounded and serious, with supernatural elements woven in without overwhelming the historical drama. If you liked the raw emotional weight of Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal or the Shinsengumi dynamics in Peacemaker Kurogane, this sits comfortably in that space. It's a slower burn than most action shows, but the character work — especially around Serizawa — makes it worth the patience.
