Grand Blue Dreaming

Upon arriving at his uncle's diving shop, college freshman Iori discovers a world of ocean adventures, boisterous camaraderie, and a surprising amount of alcohol.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Fresh off a move to a gorgeous coastal town for college, Iori Kitahara has high hopes for the classic university experience — making friends, maybe finding romance, studying by the ocean. Instead, he walks into his uncle's scuba diving shop and finds a bunch of muscular, nearly-naked dudes chugging pure alcohol like it's water. Within hours, his dream college life is already off the rails.

This 12-episode TV series from 2018 follows Iori as he gets dragged into the Diving Club at Grand Blue, where "diving" mostly means diving into another round of drinks. His cousin Chisa wants nothing to do with his newfound degeneracy, his upperclassmen Tokita and Kotobuki are terrible influences, and every attempt Iori makes to course-correct somehow ends worse than before. The comedy runs on a loop of escalating bad decisions, and it never gets old because the show commits so hard to each bit.

The thing that makes Grand Blue work is how specific it is. The Izu coastal setting gives everything this lazy summer energy, and the scuba diving scenes — when they actually happen — are genuinely beautiful. But mostly it's about dumb college kids doing dumb college things, animated with perfect comedic timing by Studio Zero-G.

If you liked the chaotic energy of KonoSuba or the unhinged comedy in TenPuru, this hits a similar nerve. It's a seinen comedy aimed at older audiences, so the humor leans into drinking culture and adult situations without holding back. One of the funniest anime comedies out there, and somehow also a decent advertisement for scuba diving.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love absurd slapstick comedy with wildly exaggerated facial expressions — Zero-G leans into it hard
College-life chaos with a tight 12-episode run and zero filler sounds like a good time
Iori and Kouhei's chaotic bromance and constant scheming against each other is your kind of humor
You're okay with a protagonist who's dragged into nonstop drinking parties and barely escapes sober

❌ SKIP IF...

You want meaningful character arcs or romance progression — this prioritizes gags over story depth
Repetitive humor centered on alcohol, nudity, and the same punchline structure gets old fast for you
You prefer plot-driven anime — there's no real overarching narrative beyond episodic diving club antics
