Synopsis

Having endured the horrors of the Russo-Japanese War, Saichi Sugimoto earned the nickname 'Immortal Sugimoto,' which tells you everything about what this guy is willing to endure. Now he's in Hokkaido chasing a hidden Ainu gold treasure, and the only map to it is tattooed across the skin of 24 escaped convicts from Abashiri Prison. After nearly getting mauled by a bear, he teams up with Asirpa, a young Ainu girl with her own reasons for hunting down the gold, and the two of them set off on one of the wildest treasure hunts in anime. This TV series is the final season — 13 episodes from Brain's Base adapting the closing chapters of the seinen manga — and it's where every thread comes together. The thing that sets Golden Kamuy apart is how seriously it treats Ainu culture and language while also being a show where people eat squirrel brains and get into knife fights every other episode. The tonal shifts between genuine historical education, brutal action, and absurd comedy shouldn't work, but they do. If you liked Vinland Saga's blend of violence and philosophical weight, or the historical grounding of Rurouni Kenshin with a grittier edge, this hits a similar space. It also shares some of that Samurai Champloo energy where wildly different characters bounce off each other in unexpected ways. Just make sure you start from season one — you'll want the full ride for this one.

Animation has its issues, but very excited to get to the last bits of Golden Kamuy. Ashiripa... stay safe out there...

I'm so glad they decided to split the final act into a separate arc, so this last episode could be truly felt as a prelude to the the story's ending. The animation could have still been better, but Noda's original work really shines through!

I think this is a solid second-to-last episode, adding more meat to some internal conflicts (with Koito specifically) and some... resolutions, to say the least (like with Nikaidō).
