In a future ravaged by Kaiju and Godzilla, humanity flees Earth, but a young man fueled by revenge plots a return to a transformed planet.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Godzilla and a wave of kaiju overran the Earth, driving humanity off the planet and leaving the survivors to drift through space on a cramped ship for twenty years. That's the setup for this 2017 movie from Polygon Pictures, and it hits different from any Godzilla story you've seen before. Haruo Sakaki watched Godzilla kill his parents as a kid, and now he's a young captain with a vendetta and a plan to take the planet back. The catch? When the survivors finally return to Earth, they find that 20,000 years have passed due to time dilation, and the entire ecosystem has evolved around Godzilla. The world they left behind doesn't exist anymore.

This is a full CGI anime film, so if you've seen Knights of Sidonia, the visual style will feel familiar — that same Polygon Pictures aesthetic, angular and moody. The tone leans heavily into military sci-fi with a revenge narrative running through it. Think Attack on Titan's "humanity on the brink" desperation mixed with a kaiju film's sense of scale. If you liked the existential dread of Neon Genesis Evangelion's later episodes — that feeling of fighting something you probably can't beat — there's a thread of that here too.

It's the first part of a trilogy, so it's more setup than resolution, but the premise alone carries it. Godzilla reimagined as this apex force that literally reshaped an entire planet's evolution over millennia is a genuinely compelling angle.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You dig post-apocalyptic sci-fi settings — this reimagines Godzilla 20,000 years into the future
Strategic military planning against a kaiju sounds more interesting to you than pure monster brawls
Polygon Pictures' CG style appeals to you — Godzilla's 3D design looks genuinely impressive here
You want a fresh take on the franchise that leans hard into space opera and world-building

❌ SKIP IF...

You expect classic kaiju-vs-kaiju action — this film's heavy on technobabble and exposition instead
Flat, underdeveloped human characters are a dealbreaker — nobody here gets real emotional depth
The hybrid CG-and-traditional animation style from Polygon Pictures feels awkward and stiff to you
