Generator Gawl
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Landing three months off schedule, three young scientists find themselves stuck pretending to be college students while the apocalypse quietly ticks closer. That's the setup for Generator Gawl, a 12-episode TV series from Tatsunoko Production that somehow makes 'prevent World War III' feel intimate and grounded rather than bombastic. Gawl, Koji, and Ryo are trying to stop their government from weaponizing genetically enhanced humans called Generators — beings that triggered a war in their timeline that wiped out most of humanity. The clock is against them, they're operating with incomplete information, and someone from their own era is actively working to make sure history stays exactly as it was. What keeps it from feeling heavy-handed is the texture of everyday life woven around the mission — cramped student housing, a landlady's sharp-tongued daughter who has zero patience for Gawl's impulsiveness, and the kind of low-stakes bickering that makes the high-stakes moments land harder. The tone genuinely earns both its comedy and its drama rather than treating them as separate modes. If you liked Steins;Gate for its time travel stakes wrapped in character chemistry, or Noein: To Your Other Self for sci-fi that cares about the people involved, this one covers similar ground in a much tighter runtime. It's a bit rough around the edges being a 1998 production, but the story moves with purpose and doesn't overstay its welcome.
