Garzey's Wing
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In his mid-twenties, Chris keeps bombing his college entrance exams, trains kendo at his family shrine, and is basically just coasting through life. Then his soul gets ripped out of his body and dropped into Byston Well, a parallel fantasy world, while his physical body carries on without him back in Japan. Both versions of Chris are now dealing with their own problems simultaneously, and what happens to one affects the other. In Byston Well, he's been identified as Garzey's Wing, a prophesied holy warrior the enslaved Metomeus tribe is counting on to lead their rebellion. The catch: he has no idea how to be a holy warrior, his sword is dull, and people keep dying around him while he figures things out. His one supernatural asset is a pair of glowing wings on his ankles, which is either going to save everyone or just make for an awkward legend. This is a 3-episode OVA from 1996 by J.C.Staff, scored by Shirō Sagisu of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame. If you've watched Fushigi Yugi or The Twelve Kingdoms and wanted something shorter and rougher around the edges, this fits that lane. Fans of Aura Battler Dunbine will recognize the Byston Well setting, since this is set in the same world. The tone is earnest and serious, not ironic, which makes the chaotic setup land differently than you might expect.
