Gakuen Alice
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At just 10 years old, cheerful and slightly clueless Mikan Sakura watches her best friend Hotaru suddenly get whisked away to a mysterious boarding school called Alice Academy. After months of zero contact and some unsettling rumors about how the school treats its students, Mikan does what any loyal best friend would do — she runs away from home to find her. Turns out Alice Academy isn't just some elite prep school. It's a locked-down institution for kids with supernatural abilities called Alices, and somehow Mikan has one too. Now she's stuck behind the gates, navigating a school full of kids who can read minds, control fire, or invent impossible machines, while trying to reconnect with a best friend who honestly seems like she couldn't care less that Mikan showed up. The dynamic between Mikan's relentless warmth and Natsume Hyuuga's brooding hostility gives the show a slow-burn tension that carries it through 26 episodes. It starts comedic and youthful, very much a shoujo school comedy, but the edges of something darker peek through early — the academy isn't as benevolent as it looks. If you liked the found-family warmth of Fruits Basket or the magical school setting of Shugo Chara, this hits a similar nerve. It's a 2004 Group TAC production adapted from the manga, and while the animation shows its age, the character writing holds up. Think cozy supernatural school life with just enough mystery to keep you curious.
