Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After sacrificing everything to save his brother, Edward Elric woke up in 1923 Munich with no alchemy and no way home. That's where this movie picks up. If you watched the original Fullmetal Alchemist series (the 2003 one, not Brotherhood), this is the actual ending — the conclusion those characters deserved. Ed's stuck in post-WWI Germany, surrounded by people who look eerily like the friends he left behind but aren't them. He befriends Alfons Heiderich, a young rocket scientist who resembles Alphonse, and Noah, a Romani woman caught up in something much bigger than either of them realizes. Meanwhile, a secret society called the Thule Society is trying to open a gateway to what they call Shamballa — which happens to be Ed's world. The real history blending into the fantasy here is genuinely clever. Actual historical figures and political movements from Weimar-era Germany get woven into the plot in ways that feel surprisingly grounded. Michiru Oshima's orchestral score, performed by the Moscow Orchestra, gives everything this heavy, cinematic weight. If you liked the alternate-world tension in Steins;Gate or the way Code Geass mixes political intrigue with personal stakes, this hits similar notes. It's emotional without being manipulative, action-packed when it needs to be, and honestly just a satisfying farewell to Ed and Al. Studio Bones brought their best animation for this one. You do need to watch the original series first though — this won't land otherwise.
