From Up on Poppy Hill
Oshimeter
Synopsis
On a hill overlooking Yokohama's harbor, a girl named Umi starts each morning by raising signal flags — a quiet tribute to her father, lost at sea during the Korean War, in a city still finding its footing in 1963. She doesn't know anyone's watching, but a boy named Shun notices from the water below and writes about it in the school newspaper. That's how they meet, and from there, things unfold in this really gentle, specific way that Studio Ghibli does better than anyone. The two of them end up leading a campaign to save their school's crumbling old clubhouse from demolition — the city wants to tear it down to modernize for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. So you've got this push-and-pull between preserving what matters and moving forward, all filtered through two teenagers figuring out their feelings for each other while scrubbing floors and rallying classmates. The 1960s Yokohama setting is rendered in gorgeous hand-drawn detail — narrow streets, bustling ports, wood-paneled rooms — and the soundtrack has this wistful folk quality that just sits with you afterward. If you liked the everyday warmth of Whisper of the Heart or the quiet emotional weight of Only Yesterday, this lives in that same neighborhood. It's a Goro Miyazaki movie, not Hayao, but honestly this is his best work. A romance that earns its feelings through small moments rather than big dramatic swings. The kind of film you finish and then just sit there for a minute.
