Synopsis
At just four years old, Ning Que watched his entire family get slaughtered before his eyes. While fleeing through a literal sea of corpses, he found two things: a mysterious black umbrella and an abandoned infant girl named Sangsang. Years later, the two of them are inseparable — he's her protector, she's his anchor — and they're making their way to Du City so Ning Que can try to get into the prestigious Tang Academy. The catch? He apparently has zero talent for cultivation in a world where cultivation is everything. This ONA from Wonder Cat Animation adapts a beloved web novel set in a Tang Dynasty-inspired fantasy world, and the worldbuilding here is dense in the best way. It's not just martial arts and power scaling — there's genuine weight to the relationship between Ning Que and Sangsang, and the story takes its time letting their bond carry the emotional stakes alongside the action. The tone sits somewhere between gritty survival drama and classic cultivation adventure, with enough political intrigue and mystery to keep things layered. If you liked the character dynamics and dark atmosphere of Mo Dao Zu Shi, or the mythological depth of something like Jiang Ziya, this hits a similar nerve but carves out its own identity. Fans of Binghe Xijian Lu will recognize that blend of historical setting and personal stakes. It's emotional, it's action-packed, and it earns both.
