Synopsis

As a rookie sky pirate, Coud Van Giruet is not particularly good at his job. During a routine raid, he stumbles across Ren — a sleeping girl who turns out to be an Edel Raid, a being that can merge with a human partner to become a living weapon. Ren has one goal: reach the legendary Edel Garden, the place where all Edel Raids were born. Coud, for reasons he can't fully articulate yet, decides to take her there. Along the way, they pick up a mismatched crew from Arc Aile, an organization that protects Edel Raids — including the no-nonsense Cisqua, the laid-back Rowen, and Kuea, an Edel Raid who's basically a walking appetite. The group dynamic carries this 26-episode TV series through its early stretch, which leans light and adventurous before gradually getting into heavier territory around trust, identity, and what it means to treat someone as a partner versus a tool. The world itself is worth mentioning — floating islands, airships, diverse cultures — and the soundtrack is by Yuki Kajiura, which alone elevates the atmosphere considerably. If you liked the road-trip-with-a-purpose feel of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, or the fantasy romance energy of The World is Still Beautiful, this hits a similar spot. It's a mid-2000s shounen adventure from Xebec that doesn't reinvent anything, but the human-weapon partnership system and Coud and Ren's slowly developing bond give it a warmth that's easy to settle into.
