Synopsis
The boundary between hell and the human world refuses to hold, and the yokai keep slipping through and wandering into the human world, drawn by the increasingly murky energy of human souls. Someone has to round them up, and that job falls to the Yokai Patrol: Enma-kun, the hot-headed, fire-wielding nephew of the Great King Enma; Yukiko-Hime, an ice princess who's equal parts powerful and bossy; and Kapaeru, a half-kappa who leans hard into the comic relief role. When a regular kid named Tsutomu starts getting attacked by escaped monsters near his school, he gets pulled into their world and their ongoing supernatural cleanup operation. The setup is simple, but the show runs with it across 25 episodes of creature-of-the-week chaos that blends genuine yokai folklore with slapstick humor and a surprising edge of darkness underneath the goofy surface. It's rooted in traditional Japanese mythology, so you'll encounter a real variety of creatures drawn from actual folklore rather than generic monster-of-the-week filler. If you grew up with GeGeGe no Kitaro or enjoyed the yokai world-building in Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, this is an interesting look at where a lot of that DNA came from. Fans of Yokai Watch will also recognize the same basic love of Japanese supernatural creatures, just wrapped in a distinctly 1973 aesthetic. Toei Animation's classic style gives the whole thing a vintage charm that's hard to replicate.
