Date A Live
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In a world where catastrophic spatial quakes have been killing people for thirty years, Shido Itsuka is just an ordinary high school kid trying to get by. Turns out these disasters are caused by beings called Spirits — powerful, dangerous, and very much not human. When Shido stumbles into a quake zone and meets a Spirit named Tohka, his little sister Kotori drops a bombshell: she's secretly the commander of an organization called Ratatoskr, and they've figured out a way to neutralize Spirits without military force. The method? Shido has to take them on dates, make them fall in love with him, and seal their powers with a kiss. Yeah, that's the actual plan. What makes Date A Live work is that it leans into the absurdity of its premise without losing sight of the stakes. The Spirits aren't just conquest targets — each one has a distinct personality and backstory that makes the dating sim setup feel less mechanical than you'd expect. There's genuine action when the military organization AST shows up trying to kill the Spirits outright, and the comedy hits more often than it misses. If you enjoyed the supernatural harem dynamics of High School DxD or the "win their hearts" structure of The World God Only Knows, this 12-episode TV series from 2013 sits comfortably in that space. It's lighter than either of those in some ways, but the romance-meets-apocalypse angle gives it its own identity. Solid entry point if you're into urban fantasy with a dating twist.
