Chimera: Target I Datenshi Kourin
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Serving the person you most want dead is the whole engine driving this late-90s OVA, and Rei lives that tension — hired to kill for the man who destroyed her family. Set in a grimy, noir-soaked version of Hong Kong's criminal underworld, Chimera follows Rei, an assassin known as the Angel of Death. She's precise, cold, and operates in the shadows of a mafia empire run by John Roy, a man whose crimes against her family go well beyond murder. The story leans hard into themes of revenge, identity, and what it costs to keep yourself alive inside a world that's already taken everything from you. Being a single-episode OVA from 1997, it's compact and doesn't waste time — you get the setup, the atmosphere, and the character dynamics quickly, which is honestly refreshing if you're not in the mood for a slow burn. The animation carries that distinctive hand-drawn texture that late-90s Studio Sign productions had, rough edges and all. If you've watched something like Shadow or Bible Black Origins and appreciated that dark, morally complicated tone over straightforward action, this fits a similar space. It's not a light watch — the subject matter is heavy and the mood rarely lifts — but if you're into emotionally weighted stories about women navigating violent, exploitative worlds on their own terms, Rei's story has something real underneath the grime.
