Chibizenji-sensei Inokori Kougiroku
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A bookish, no-nonsense scholar in post-war Tokyo, Akihiko Chuuzenji is the kind of guy who can untangle any supernatural mystery with sheer intellect and a stern look. Now picture him shrunk down to chibi size, stuck in a high school after hours, trying to solve puzzles while everything around him is comically enormous. That's the premise of Chibizenji-sensei Inokori Kougiroku, and it works way better than it has any right to. This 12-episode ONA from 100studio is a spin-off companion to the more serious Chuuzenji-sensei Mononoke Kougiroku, but you don't need to know the parent series to enjoy it. Each episode is short enough to watch on a lunch break, and the chibi art style gives everything this warm, playful energy that contrasts nicely with the mystery elements. Chuuzenji still approaches every strange occurrence with his usual analytical rigor — he's just three inches tall while doing it, which changes the dynamic considerably. The humor comes from the gap between his dignified personality and his ridiculous situation, and the mysteries are light but clever little brain teasers. If you enjoyed the compact storytelling of stuff like No Guns Life's mini episodes or the tonal playfulness of From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad's Been Reincarnated Mini, this fits right in that lane. It's a cozy, funny watch that doesn't ask much of your time.
