Driven by revenge and bound by magic, two young men forge an alliance with a banished sorceress princess to unravel a mystery spanning time and space.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Shakespeare, a dead girl, and two best friends who'll never be the same — that's the unlikely combination tying it all together. Yoshino Takigawa has been secretly dating his best friend Mahiro's younger sister Aika — but then Aika turns up murdered, and Mahiro vanishes without a trace. A month later, Yoshino gets held at gunpoint by a stranger looking for Mahiro, and that's when things stop being a normal grief story and become something much stranger. Turns out Mahiro has been communicating with Hakaze Kusaribe, a powerful mage stranded on a deserted island, whose own clan is trying to awaken a world-ending tree. Mahiro's deal is simple: help Hakaze stop the apocalypse, and she helps him find Aika's killer. Yoshino gets dragged along for the ride. What makes this 24-episode TV series from Studio Bones stand out is how it weaves Hamlet and The Tempest directly into its plot — not as window dressing, but as actual thematic architecture for the mystery. Characters quote Shakespeare to each other mid-argument, and it somehow works. The back-and-forth between Yoshino and Mahiro carries the show; one is calculating and calm, the other is volatile and revenge-driven, and you're never quite sure who's being honest. If you liked the layered mysteries in Steins;Gate or the way Erased builds tension around a central death, this hits a similar nerve. It's also got that Psycho-Pass quality where the philosophical conversations feel just as important as the action scenes. Genuinely underrated.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love intricate mystery plots that weave revenge, magic, and fate across 24 episodes
Shakespeare's Hamlet and The Tempest as anime inspiration sounds like your kind of thing
Bones studio animation with fluid action sequences and a lush orchestral soundtrack appeals to you
You enjoy cat-and-mouse dynamics between two smart leads — Mahiro's rage vs Yoshino's calm logic

❌ SKIP IF...

You want non-stop action — the first half is heavy on philosophical dialogue and debate scenes
Frequent literary references woven into conversations feel pretentious rather than enriching to you
You prefer characters who stay consistent — some mid-series behavior shifts feel abrupt and jarring
