Synopsis

Buried in a mountain of scrap, the upper half of a female cyborg — still somehow intact — is discovered by a doctor who rebuilds her, names her Gally, and watches her wake up with no memory of who she was. What she does have is an instinctive, terrifyingly precise fighting ability that kicks in the moment anyone threatens her. That gap between her gentle, curious personality and the lethal thing her body knows how to do is the beating heart of this story. Set in a grimy, lawless junkyard city that exists literally beneath a gleaming utopia floating in the sky, Gunnm is a two-episode OVA from Madhouse that packs in a surprising amount of emotional weight for its runtime. It's not trying to resolve every mystery about Gally's past — it's more interested in watching her figure out what kind of person she wants to be, in a place that doesn't make that easy. The cyberpunk aesthetic is rough and tactile in the way only early-90s hand-drawn animation can be. If you've seen Ghost in the Shell and wanted something a bit more grounded and character-focused, or if Blame! gave you a taste for bleak industrial sci-fi with a human core, Gally's story scratches a similar itch. It's also the source material that eventually became the 2019 live-action film, so if you bounced off that, this is worth trying — it's leaner and hits differently.
