Angel's Egg
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A young girl wanders alone through a crumbling gothic city, guarding a mysterious egg she keeps hidden under her dress like it's the most important thing in the world. Nobody tells you what the egg is, where it came from, or what's inside — and that ambiguity is kind of the entire point. The world around her is deeply strange: unmanned tanks roll through ruins, fishermen chase the shadows of fish that don't exist, and massive orbs float overhead carrying stone goddess statues. Then a man with a cross-shaped staff shows up, and the two of them walk through this decaying landscape together, barely speaking, asking questions neither of them can answer about faith, existence, and purpose. This OVA is only one episode long and has almost no dialogue, so if you need plot momentum and clear answers, it will frustrate you. But if you're in the mood for something that washes over you like a fever dream — gorgeous hand-drawn animation, a haunting atmospheric soundtrack, and imagery that sticks around in your head for days — this is genuinely unlike anything else. Think less Ghost in the Shell, more the feeling of Ghost in the Shell's quietest moments stretched into something almost entirely visual. Fans of Paprika or the more surreal corners of anime will find a lot to sit with here. It rewards multiple watches and personal interpretation more than most films twice its length.
