Angel Blade
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In a future where humanity has built cities above the clouds to escape a polluted, unlivable surface, college student Moena Shinguji navigates daily life far above the smog. Below that smog lives a kingdom of mutants led by Phantom Lady, a powerful villain who sends her forces up to prey on the people above. Moena discovers she can transform into Angel Blade, a masked warrior who stands between humanity and those attacks — and that discovery comes with a lot she wasn't prepared for. The setup borrows the skeleton of classic magical girl transformation stories, then drags it somewhere decidedly more adult. Character designer Masami Ōbari gives everything a stylized, exaggerated look that's clearly intentional, and the animation quality holds up noticeably well for the genre and era. This is a 3-episode OVA from 2001, so it moves fast and doesn't overstay its welcome. If you grew up watching Cutey Honey and wondered what a harder-edged version might look like, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of Kekko Kamen will also recognize the general DNA here — action, absurdity, and zero interest in playing it safe. It's not trying to be subtle about what it is, which is honestly part of the appeal. Go in knowing the genre, and it delivers exactly what it promises.
