Synopsis

With no memory of who he is, Jiro knows only that he's supposed to protect two kids whose father has gone missing. That father, Dr. Komyoji, built him with something called the Gemini conscience circuit — essentially a simulated soul that lets Jiro feel emotions and wrestle with right and wrong in a way other robots simply can't. It's a small detail that ends up carrying the whole show. Mitsuko and Masaru, the kids he's protecting, are trying to figure out what happened to their dad while a shadowy organization called DARK keeps sending androids after them. Jiro fights them off, but unlike most robot protagonists, he's not confident or cool about it. He's genuinely confused by his own feelings, and that tension is what makes this 13-episode TV series worth your time. The animation leans hard into a retro 70s aesthetic — think Shotaro Ishinomori's original character designs brought into 2000 with a moody, atmospheric soundtrack underneath everything. If you've seen Astro Boy or Cyborg 009 and wondered what that era's themes would look like with a more emotionally grounded treatment, this is exactly that. Fans of Casshern Sins will recognize the same melancholy robot-questioning-humanity energy, just with a warmer family dynamic at the center. It's not flashy, but it's sincere in a way that sticks with you.
