Synopsis

On the surface, Masachika Kuze looks like the kind of high schooler who does the bare minimum, the kind of guy no one would suspect of sitting on a secret — he's fluent in Russian. His classmate Alya, a half-Russian, half-Japanese girl with an ice-queen reputation, has a habit of muttering sweet, flustered things about him in Russian, assuming he has no clue what she's saying. He does. He just doesn't let on. That gap between what she says out loud in Japanese and what she whispers in Russian is where all the comedy and tension lives, and this second season from Doga Kobo keeps building on it. Their relationship inches forward in that satisfying slow-burn way where every small moment actually feels earned. The school setting stays grounded, the character dynamics get a bit deeper, and the Russian language gimmick never stops being funny because the show knows exactly how to time those moments. If you liked the will-they-won't-they energy of Toradora or the way My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU handles a protagonist who's sharper than he lets on, this hits a similar nerve but with a lighter, warmer touch. It also does something cool with its ending themes — each episode gets a different cover of a well-known J-pop or anime song, which gives every episode its own send-off. If Kimi ni Todoke's gentleness appeals to you but you want more comedy baked in, this is a solid pick.
