📖 SYNOPSIS
Neo-Tokyo is a city rebuilt on the ashes of catastrophe, and it feels like it could collapse again at any moment. Shotaro Kaneda leads a motorcycle gang through neon-lit streets, getting into turf wars and generally being a reckless punk — until his best friend Tetsuo has a run-in with a strange psychic child and gets snatched up by the military. Turns out Tetsuo's got latent powers the government wants to weaponize, and as those abilities start spiraling out of control, the dynamic between him and Kaneda shifts from brotherhood to something way more complicated. Meanwhile, Kaneda gets pulled into an underground resistance through a woman named Kei, and the whole city starts feeling like a pressure cooker.
This is a new anime adaptation of the Akira manga by Sunrise, and the big deal here is that the original 1988 film only covered a fraction of the source material. A full series means room to actually dig into the political intrigue, the military conspiracy, and Tetsuo's descent without cramming it all into two hours. The vibe is dark cyberpunk with a heavy emphasis on what unchecked power does to people who weren't ready for it.
If you liked the body horror and urban chaos of Dorohedoro, or the raw intensity of Devilman Crybaby, this sits in similar territory — just with more motorcycles and psychic destruction. If you've only seen the original film, there's a lot of story left to tell.
