Synopsis
Consumed by jealousy over Urara Academy's star students, a rival school principal sends a spy kid named Popi to figure out their secret. That's the entire premise of this three-episode OVA, and it works because the students Popi encounters are wonderfully chaotic. There's Chacha, a cheerful little magician who trips over her own spells, Riiya who can turn into a wolf on a whim, and Shiine who's actually competent but surrounded by enough nonsense to cancel it out. Popi's mission to gather serious intelligence keeps colliding with how genuinely weird and warm everyone at Urara is, and that collision is where most of the humor lives. It's not trying to be clever about magic — it's just having fun with how absurd a magic school full of odd kids can get. The tone is loose and playful, closer to a Saturday morning cartoon than anything with dramatic stakes. If you've seen Dragon Half or Mahoujin Guru Guru and enjoyed that brand of fairy-tale parody wrapped in slapstick, this fits right alongside them. It's also rooted in shoujo sensibilities, so there's a sweetness underneath the chaos that keeps it from feeling purely goofy. At only three episodes it's a quick watch — more of a fun side trip than a full commitment, especially if you already have history with the original Akazukin Chacha TV series.
