Synopsis

A burned-out teacher who hates people — and not in the edgy, cool way, but in the "past trauma made him shut everyone out" way — Rei Hitoma takes a remote teaching gig at a mountain school expecting peace and quiet, maybe some personal healing. What he gets instead is a classroom full of demi-human girls — a mermaid, a werewolf, a rabbit, and a bird — all trying to learn how to become proper humans. And he's supposed to be the one teaching them what humanity looks like. The irony isn't lost on anyone. This 13-episode TV series from asread. is based on a light novel, and it leans into that premise with a genuinely emotional tone. It's not a harem comedy despite the setup — the drama and supernatural elements stay grounded in questions about identity, acceptance, and what it actually means to be human. Each of the students, like the mermaid Kyoka Minazuki or the werewolf Isaki Ogami, brings her own struggles that mirror Rei's in unexpected ways. The dynamic between a teacher who's given up on people and students who desperately want to become people is where the show finds its heart. If you liked Interviews with Monster Girls but wanted something with more emotional weight, or you enjoyed the found-family warmth of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid in a school setting, this fits that space well. It's quiet, character-driven, and genuinely thoughtful about what it means to connect with others when you've forgotten how.

Haruna's emotional outburst and confession of her regrets really hit me hard. It was raw and you could really feel her pain.
I just love how the teacher handled Haruna's emotional moment, and his final monologue about humans. He really understands them, even the parts he hates. It's like he accepts people for who they are, flaws and all, and that's why he's such a great teacher, you know? It really shows his growth too, compared to how he was at the start of the series. He's still a misanthrope, but in a much more understanding way.
