A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace
Oshimeter
Synopsis
As a rookie shoujo manga artist who's barely landed her first serialization, Nana Futami is already barely holding it together. Her editor Kaede is patient but firm, her assistant Mizuki keeps things running, and Nana herself has a habit of spiraling into wildly elaborate daydreams — the kind that come from staring at manuscripts too long and sleeping too little. This is basically her life now. A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace is a 13-episode TV series about the grind of making manga, told through the lens of three women trying to get a series off the ground. It covers the deadlines, the creative blocks, the weird little rituals creators develop to stay functional — but it keeps things light and comedic rather than dramatic. The humor leans into Nana's overactive imagination and the everyday absurdities of working in publishing, so it never gets heavy. If you liked Shirobako's peek behind the curtain of anime production, this is the manga industry equivalent with a smaller, more intimate cast. It also has some of that New Game energy — a young woman finding her footing in a creative workplace surrounded by capable colleagues. And if Bakuman ever felt too focused on the competitive side of manga, this one's more about the day-to-day process and the people involved. It's a chill workplace comedy with an all-female lead cast, and at 13 episodes it doesn't overstay its welcome.
