We are introduced to two young women, Mii-chan and her older friend, preparing for their sleeper train adventure. Their chatter is light and full of anticipation, a stark contrast to the ominous visuals that preceded them. They are excited about the novelty, the idea of changing plans on a whim, enjoying the simple comfort of their cabin. This scene establishes their innocence, their lack of foresight.

A polite, yet unnervingly cheerful conductor appears, delivering a series of strict warnings. He explains the train will link with another, and during this time, they must not leave their cabin or open the curtains. The older friend seems to sense the gravity, while Mii-chan remains somewhat oblivious. His words, delivered with a fixed, closed-eyed smile, hold a true weight of foreboding.

The conductor adds a final, curious instruction about keeping tickets safe, then bows and departs. The women, with a touch of youthful bravado, dismiss the warnings as overly dramatic. Soon after, the older friend leaves the cabin, drawn by a need for a drink. In the corridor, she discovers strange, unsettling piles of white granules on the floor, a quiet detail that hints at something deeply wrong. Returning, she finds Mii-chan already asleep, leaving her alone with her unease.

The older friend, feeling a sudden chill, closes the curtain more securely. Almost immediately, a violent clang and jolt shakes the entire train, throwing them off balance. Mii-chan wakes abruptly, disoriented by the sudden noise and movement. The train has linked, as the conductor warned, and the strange rules now take on a new, urgent meaning.

Despite the earlier warnings, Mii-chan declares an urgent need for the toilet. The older friend tries to remind her of the conductor's words, but Mii-chan's biological need overrides caution. As Mii-chan steps out into the corridor, she sees the newly linked train car, its windows showing dark, indistinct silhouettes. She notes, with a touch of surprise, how crowded it seems. This is her fatal decision.

Mii-chan's attention is drawn to the window, where the piles of ash she saw earlier now glow with an eerie, green smoke. The ash itself darkens and seems to burn. A blurry, spectral figure drifts past outside, a fleeting glimpse of something truly unnatural. Back in the cabin, the older friend registers the unsettling changes, her face etched with growing fear, knowing the danger is now tangible.

The train’s lights suddenly fail, plunging the cabin into darkness. The alarm clock, previously illuminated, now shows '2:55 AM' in dead darkness, a stark symbol of lost time and impending doom. The older friend fumbles for the switch, but the power is gone. A curtain in the car is slowly, deliberately pulled back, revealing a shadowy, monstrous figure of a train staff member, confirming their worst fears. The older friend's scream fills the sudden, terrifying silence.

The monstrous conductor appears, his eyes glowing red, his face shadowed with malice. The older friend screams Mii-chan's name, pointing wildly, trying to explain her friend's disappearance. The conductor ignores her, holding up a single, mangled, blood-stained ticket, asking if she 'let go' of it. He then transforms into a skeletal, zombie-like creature. Other grotesque figures, including one disturbingly resembling Mii-chan, emerge behind him, reaching and screaming. The older friend's reflection in her glasses shows the horror reflected in her eyes, a final image of utter despair.

The screen cuts to black, ending the confrontation abruptly, leaving the fate of the older friend unspoken but implied. The 'Yami Shibai' title card reappears, signaling the story's conclusion. The ending credits roll over a sepia-toned park scene, initially peaceful, but slowly warping and breaking, much like the sense of reality in the episode itself. The clock tower, a recurring motif, becomes broken and distorted, a final, lingering image of dread.
