Golden Kamuy Final Season Episode 13: Episode 13

The camera opens on the star-shaped Goryokaku fortress, still under siege, its battlements wreathed in smoke. Tiny figures, soldiers, lie scattered across the grounds, many still. A 7th Division soldier rides through this devastation, dismounts, and cautiously enters a nearby building. The silent arrows on the ground speak to a recent, brutal skirmish, a prelude to the horrors that unfolded.

Hijikata Toshizo, bloodied but unbowed, rides through the chaos, his concern fixed on Kantarou. He asks if anyone has seen him, knowing Kantarou understands Shiraishi's signal, a sign that something is terribly wrong. Elsewhere, Nagakura Shinpachi asks about Hijikata's escape, just as a 7th Division soldier aims at him. Kantarou, with a desperate surge, tackles the soldier, saving Nagakura, only to be shot himself.

Amidst the fallen, a bloodied and disheveled Kiroranke stands, struggling to suppress a guttural cry. Tears mix with blood on his face as he names his fallen comrades: 'Rashid! Yezhi! Anji! Boulder!' His despair quickly sharpens into a fierce resolve. He reloads his rifle, his face contorted by pain and a new, desperate determination.

A sepia-toned flashback shows Sofia and a young Wilk in a European city, once happy, now swept into a revolutionary uprising. Sofia, noticing a Russian General's opulent carriage, reveals a hidden key, a symbol of her commitment. She worries for Wilk's children, contemplating a difficult decision. Later, Wilk and Rashid discuss the grim fate of revolutionaries, their lives either ending for a cause or lived in isolation. Sofia, resolute, declares that a revolutionary without love is merely a murderer, a conviction Rashid echoes.

Back on the battlefield, Kiroranke desperately calls out to his lost friends, his voice strained with emotion. He finally cries 'Wilk!' and 'Urpasi!' before firing his rifle, a defiant act against the advancing enemy. Sugimoto, Asirpa, and Shiraishi ride, trying to escape, with Asirpa clinging to Sugimoto. Sugimoto tells Asirpa they are not running because they lost, but to protect their rights. Kiroranke, with tears and blood on his face, shouts 'Asirpa! Wilk's beloved daughter! But... you choose your own future!', a desperate blessing for her escape. He turns to face Koito Otonoshin, who approaches menacingly.

Koito fires his pistol, hitting Kiroranke in the back, forcing him to his knees and then to the grassy bank. Asirpa, watching from the fleeing horse, witnesses his fall, her eyes wide with anguish. In the ensuing chaos, Asirpa falls from the horse, grabbing onto a rope tied to Ogata's horse. Sugimoto, confused, misidentifies Ogata. Ogata, looking back at Asirpa with a mix of concern and determination, states, 'With this, I can repay Fuchi,' his intentions still shrouded in ambiguity.

Minutes earlier, in a quiet village, Tanigaki Gennjirou, Inkaramat, and their baby receive news of the Goryokaku battle. Tanigaki realizes his path lies with his comrades. In a poignant flashback, Inkaramat, holding their baby, tells Tanigaki to go, saying she will wait for him to fulfill his duty and come to terms with his past. Tanigaki apologizes, promising to return, his face a complex map of sadness and resolute purpose. He rides off on his white horse, leaving his family for the battlefield once more.

Kiroranke lies dying, clutching a torn family photo. He whispers a message in Russian, lamenting a path not taken. Koito picks up the photo, his expression somber, triggering a flashback of Wilk and Sofia in a photography studio, of Wilk suggesting Japan, and Sofia's regret. Kiroranke dies peacefully in Koito’s arms, holding the photo. But Koito, in a sudden turn, stands over Kiroranke's body and fires his pistol at the fallen photo on his chest, then reloads, a menacing smile replacing his somber look. As Kiroranke's spirit seems to pass, Asirpa experiences a profound, painful connection.

A 7th Division soldier, later revealed as Ogata, perches in a tree, binoculars in hand, smugly predicting the escape route. He muses that the enemy also couldn't predict his exact timing. He aims his rifle, observing Sugimoto and Asirpa through the scope. Ogata, a master of cunning, uses a sun reflection off his binoculars as bait, knowing his opponent would anticipate it. He fires, aiming one rifle-length below the reflection, hitting a branch, satisfied with his deception. But then he realizes he's been grazed by a bullet, shocked by the impossible shot, knowing someone else is playing his game.

Sugimoto and Asirpa are still riding, Sugimoto injured and desperate, lamenting that their horse cannot outrun their pursuers. Usami and Hijikata, also in pursuit, decide to make their stand. Asirpa pleads with Sugimoto not to fight, to keep running. Then, a steam train appears, an industrial beast chugging along the tracks. Sugimoto realizes it is the Hakodate-bound train. Usami, with chilling foresight, plots to outwit their pursuers and use the train to reach the port and find a ship.

Hijikata and Usami board the moving train, followed by Sugimoto, Shiraishi, and Asirpa. Inside, Sugimoto realizes the train schedule is wrong, indicating a trap. He sees the next car is filled with Tsurumi-Chui's elite Second Army. Usami, with a macabre flourish, uses a dead soldier as a puppet to attack the others, creating chaotic mayhem. Hijikata, his face grim, unsheathes his katana and joins the brutal fight, cutting down soldiers with ruthless efficiency.

Sugimoto, injured and bleeding, shoves Asirpa into a small compartment beneath the seats for safety, telling Shiraishi to get her off the train. Shiraishi, wounded in the arm, also hides. Tsukishima and Koito board the train, observing the carnage. Tsukishima is shot but quickly recovers, continuing the fight. Koito is also hit but fights back fiercely, clearing his car. Sugimoto, seeing his chance, jumps from the moving train and flees into the forest. He is pursued by Tsukishima and Koito, eventually overwhelmed and captured, battered and forced to kneel.

Sugimoto is marched away, captured and exhausted, his face defiant even in defeat. He looks back at Asirpa, still hidden under the seats with Shiraishi, a silent promise passing between them. Taken to a separate car and chained, Sugimoto looks defeated but his gaze quickly hardens. He remembers the gold, the true prize. He struggles against his chains, his face contorted with effort, until he is free. He then forces open the locked door and emerges onto the roof of the moving train, bleeding but resolute, determined to continue his fight.
