His internal monologue reveals his plan: secure the deed, secure his future. His eyes, reflected in the binoculars, show Ashiripa's image, a singular, disturbing focus.

Amid the chaos, Shiraishi, wearing his unsettling skin mask, tries to rally his allies, shouting 'Charge!' He leaps over a trench, but is almost immediately shot. He tumbles into the moat, struggling to stay afloat as soldiers try, and fail, to pull him out. His usual cunning is replaced by sheer, desperate luck, or lack thereof.

Inside the fortress, Hijikata remains composed despite the enemy's infiltration. He acknowledges that his flanks have been wiped out, but this was part of his design. An aerial map illustrates his strategy: allow the enemy to penetrate gradually, then create a numerical advantage for his men. He declares their inevitable victory and survival.

Sugimoto Saichi is a whirlwind of violence. He blocks bayonet attacks, stabs soldiers with his rifle, and disarms enemies with brutal efficiency. He is a man possessed, his face splattered with blood, fighting with an almost animalistic intensity. His movements are sharp, economical, and lethal.

Koito Otonoshin watches Sugimoto fight from a building, concern etched on his face, alongside Ashiripa. He instructs Ashiripa to focus solely on protecting the land deed, believing it will ultimately benefit the Ainu. He is resolute, driven by the belief that their mission justifies the current bloodshed. He saddles a horse, preparing for an escape.

Nagakura Shinpachi, Mansoul, and Kaijo are found injured under trees. Nagakura has a broken leg, Mansoul a blown-off hand. Kaijo, though wounded, instructs them to flee, saying they have done enough. He chooses to return to Goryokaku, vowing to stay with Hijikata to the very end, a silent, grim resolution.

With smoke rising from the fortress, Tsurumi stands outside with Tsukishima and Koito, issuing orders. He directs his men to eliminate remaining enemy forces and sends more troops in. Tsurumi declares that he, Koito, and Tsukishima will personally search the interior for the land deed. His voice is calm, his purpose clear.

Ushiyama, impaled by a bayonet, lies wounded but defiant. He reloads his pistol, telling Hijikata that his life is already forfeit and he will protect him. Hijikata places a hand on his shoulder in acceptance. Ushiyama charges, firing, and is ultimately shot multiple times, collapsing with a bullet hole in his forehead. He dies with a smile, accepting his fate.

Shiraishi, consumed by rage, throws grenades at Japanese soldiers, shouting, 'Damn you!' He aims at Sugimoto, but a soldier takes the hit. He then throws another grenade, which temporarily distracts Sugimoto. Sugimoto, covered in blood, charges Shiraishi, striking him with his rifle butt and knocking him into a pit.

As Shiraishi falls into the pit, he drops another grenade. Without hesitation, Sugimoto throws himself over Shiraishi, shielding him from the blast with his own body. In the golden light of the explosion, the two men exchange a brief, relieved moment. They punch fists, a silent pact of survival. The light fades, leaving Sugimoto standing, his eyes glowing with renewed determination.

The episode concludes with Sugimoto, battered and bleeding, crawling and stumbling through a dark, traditional Japanese corridor. He collapses, looking up with a resigned expression, then slowly pushes himself to his feet. He walks deliberately towards a distant light, a silhouette against its brightness. It is a weary journey, a testament to sheer endurance.
