Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Episode 25: Doorway of Darkness

Edward Elric awakens in a surreal, blood-red void, disoriented and alone. He calls out, his voice swallowed by the emptiness, until he finds Ling Yao holding a torch. After a brief, comical scuffle to confirm identities, they realize they are truly trapped in a place beyond understanding, presumably within Gluttony.

As they explore, Ling deduces they are inside Gluttony's stomach, evidenced by familiar debris like a wrecked car and the remnants of Roy Mustang's flame alchemy. Edward then spots Alphonse Elric's metal hand, though his panic turns to relief as he hopes Al escaped. His attempt at 'Elric brother telepathy' is met with Ling's dry skepticism, grounding the bizarre situation with a touch of character humor.

Back on the surface, May Chang grieves inconsolably over her lost panda, Shao May, a tiny companion she nursed back to health in a poignant flashback. She explains her true mission to Scar and Yoki: to find immortality for her clan, who are at the bottom of Xing's social hierarchy. Her childish exterior belies a weighty, mature ambition to save her people, revealing a deeper motive for her journey.

Moved by May's plight, Scar agrees to help her find Shao May before dawn, understanding her pain from his own losses. He explains that the night offers safer passage from military patrols. Yoki expresses surprise at Scar's sudden kindness, but May sees the genuine empathy in the formidable warrior.

Inside Gluttony, Edward and Ling grow increasingly exhausted and hungry, wading through the viscous, red fluid. Ling finally collapses, but Edward refuses to give up, driven by his numerous promises and his brother waiting for him. He hoists the taller man onto his back, declaring his stubborn refusal to die in such a pathetic place.

Desperate for sustenance, Edward alchemizes his own leather boot into a foul-smelling soup, much to Ling's disgust. Their grim meal is interrupted by a potent 'qi' that Ling senses, signalling the approach of Envy. The Homunculus walks calmly toward them, a smug expression on their face, enjoying their captives' misery.

Envy confirms they are inside Gluttony, revealing it as a failed attempt by 'Father' to create his own Portal of Truth. Unlike the true Gateway, Gluttony's space is a dark, endless void where anything swallowed is trapped forever. Edward and Ling are left with the crushing realization that there is no escape, their hopes for survival extinguished.

In a truly shocking moment, Envy casually reveals that King Bradley is actually Wrath, the first Homunculus, designed to age like a human for infiltration. Edward is stunned; this information shatters his understanding of Amestris's leadership and the danger faced by his allies. Ling's earlier sense of inhuman 'qi' from Bradley is chillingly confirmed.

Envy further taunts Edward, boasting about their role in instigating the Ishvalan Civil War by impersonating an officer and shooting an Ishvalan child. They describe the act of destroying a nation as 'invigorating,' mocking human manipulation. Edward's rage boils over as he faces the embodiment of the tragedy that has haunted so many lives.

The transformation culminates in a horrifying beast covered in thousands of agonizing human faces and hands, representing the souls trapped within their Philosopher's Stone.

On the surface, Alphonse encounters Gluttony, who is surprisingly docile and weeping over his lost companions. Al recognizes Gluttony's childlike nature as an opportunity, asking him to lead him to 'Father.' This dangerous gambit is his only hope of finding Edward, even if it means confronting the mastermind behind everything.

In Central, King Bradley drops his benevolent facade, confronting Roy Mustang and revealing the Homunculi's long-standing control over Amestris. Bradley mockingly recounts his 'anger' at Maes Hughes's funeral, not out of grief, but because Hughes's child cried too loudly. This cold, contemptuous admission pushes Mustang to the brink of losing his composure.

Bradley systematically dismantles Mustang's power base, transferring his loyal team members like Jean Havoc and Riza Hawkeye to distant posts. He assigns Hawkeye as his own assistant, holding her as a hostage to ensure Mustang's obedience. Mustang is left helpless, watching his subordinates taken away, utterly outmanoeuvred and isolated.

Inside Gluttony, Edward uses the iron-rich red fluid to transmute a sharp blade, preparing for a desperate battle against giant Envy. He and Ling face the multi-limbed beast, their survival hanging by a thread as the monster lashes out. Meanwhile, Alphonse and Gluttony approach Central City, Al steeling his resolve to face 'Father,' hoping Edward is still alive and waiting.
