📖 SYNOPSIS

In the heart of Dungeon City, Matthew is considered trash — a cowardly freeloader riding on the coattails of Arwin, the Crimson Princess Knight. She's the city's hero, leading her party into a massive dungeon at the center of town, hunting for a legendary treasure that could restore her fallen kingdom. Meanwhile, Matthew apparently just sits around spending her money. The townsfolk hate him, her companions barely tolerate him, and nobody can figure out why someone like Arwin keeps him around. Here's the thing though: Matthew isn't what he seems. The whole setup leans into that gap between what people assume about someone and what's actually going on beneath the surface. The early episodes do a good job building that tension, letting you sit in the discomfort of everyone's contempt before peeling back layers. It's a TV series from Studio Blade, adapted from a light novel, and it blends dungeon-crawling action with a character dynamic that keeps you guessing about what Matthew is really capable of. The relationship between him and Arwin carries real weight — it's not just romance filler, it's central to the story's momentum. If you liked the "underestimated protagonist proving everyone wrong" angle from The Rising of the Shield Hero, or the grittier fantasy tone of Goblin Slayer, this hits a similar nerve. It also has some of that grounded party-based adventuring feel reminiscent of Grimgar. Worth keeping on your radar if you're into fantasy with a slow-burn reveal at its core.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You dig noir-flavored fantasy where characters die left and right in a gritty dungeon city
A strong female lead carrying the party while her "kept man" hides a deeper role sounds appealing
You enjoy underdog protagonists who are universally despised but clearly more than they seem
Dengeki Novel Grand Prize winners catch your attention—this won the 28th edition

❌ SKIP IF...

Studio Blade's track record doesn't inspire confidence for action-heavy fantasy animation
You're tired of "secretly powerful loser" male leads paired with capable warrior women
You'd rather read the light novel first—it's praised for its writing over any adaptation
