Synopsis

The Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart was founded alongside the development of "Machinart," machine magic capable of giving life and intelligence to mechanical dolls subsequently called as "automaton." Its aim: train skilled puppeteers to control the automatons, as militaries across the globe have begun incorporating Machinart into their armies. After miserably failing the academy's entrance exams, Raishin Akabane and his humanoid automaton Yaya must defeat one of the top one hundred students to earn the right to take part in the Evening Party, a fight for supremacy between puppeteers using their automatons. The last one standing is bestowed the title of "Wiseman" and granted access to the powerful forbidden arts. Thus, Raishin challenges Charlotte Belew and her automaton Sigmund to a duel, but before they even begin, Sigmund is attacked by other students. After saving his opponents from their assaulters, Raishin cancels the duel but is forced to search for a new way to gain access to the Party. Driven by the tragedies of his past, Raishin fights alongside Yaya to rise to the top and claim the title of Wiseman. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Is this worth it to watch? Here are my points to consider: This season primarily focuses on the characters surrounding the protagonist, while also slowly revealing more details about his goals, past, character and his connection with Yaya (also note that Yaya's backstory or her creator wasn't covered in this season). There aren't any interludes in between the end and start of a new arc. I did some research to understand what Raishin was doing when using his magic on Yaya since it wasn't even explained in any of the episode what he was doing. As for the protagonist's story, it feels like a combination of various familiar shounen elements mixed with the usual harem themes The animation started out pretty strong only to fall flat in the face nearing the final episode. The anime didn't have that exaggerated jiggle physics and overly ridiculous fan-service scenes (except for one episode), it's just the typical standards of an ecchi anime with exposure limited to nudity such as visible breasts and nipples if you are watching the Blu-ray version.

We are finally introduced to number 87 who kept being absent during the Evening Party with good reason now, Yaya goes Super Saiyan, and the sisters are finally reunited. The pacing is better here, but it gets a little haywire at times. The art is still nice, as well as the animation, their faces are kind of cute, and the steam punk aesthetic will never get old. The time it takes them to heal feels realistic, so with that fact I'm quite surprised to still see Raishin kicking. I noticed the Machine Doll Butler pulled punches when he hit Akabane a single attack would be grounds for dismemberment, so give a round of applause for plot armor the most consistent thing in this show next to the pads her breast joke! It took some getting use to, but the silliness of this show, its serious tone, and its wacky cast of characters who can't seem to read the room; was a nice world to be introduced to, I enjoyed my time getting to know the characters.
