Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai 16 Episode 7: Guru Guru

The traditional Yami Shibai opening prepares the viewer, as a drum beats a steady rhythm. Three young girls on swings watch with serious faces. The Storyteller invites us in, his smile unsettling. The title "Guruguru" appears, framed like a kamishibai stage, signaling a tale both ancient and intimate.

We meet Asako Sensei, visibly pregnant, her hands resting gently on her belly. She speaks of going on maternity leave, the children eager to see her baby. Her husband, engrossed in his phone, offers polite but detached affirmations. Their domestic scene feels calm, yet a subtle disinterest from the husband hints at a coming rift.

Children gather around Asako, asking eagerly if "Guruguru" has happened yet. Her eyes twinkle with amusement and warmth. Her husband, however, looks up from his phone, his face betraying confusion. He presses her, trying to understand this word, initially guessing it refers to the umbilical cord.

Asako stands to make tea, still calm and pleasant, though she is thirsty. Her husband agrees absently. But as he is left alone, his face contorts, suspicion twisting his features. His eyes glow with a nascent paranoia, illuminating his face from below as he mutters, "What are they talking about?"

Out in town, children cheerfully greet Asako, repeating the "Guruguru" question. She smiles, saying it has not happened yet. But then, shadowy, ghostly figures emerge, murmuring "Guruguru." An older woman joins the conversation about the impending birth, reinforcing the communal knowledge.

Back home, the husband's face is consumed by raw anger and fear. His eyes wide, he clutches his head, demanding to know why he alone is excluded from this knowledge. He frantically searches for "Guruguru" on his phone, desperate for an answer. A child's voice ominously declares, "They're saying it's coming soon!"

His terror intensifies as his face distorts. Asako appears, now surrounded by grotesque, ghostly children with predatory grins and glowing eyes. They whisper, "Soon! It's soon!" Yet, Asako's face remains serene, a blissful smile playing on her lips, completely unbothered by the spectral presence.

Ethereal hands reach out, followed by the silhouette of a fetus in a glowing womb. The imagery shifts to Asako's pregnant form, consumed by swirling, vine-like tendrils. The husband screams, clutching his head, "Everyone knows... everyone in town!" His wife's face transforms, becoming a skeletal, grinning specter, telling him, "I told you it's soon, didn't I?"

A painted landscape darkens, symbolizing his bleak despair. The husband's face contorts in a silent scream as he peers through a narrow gap, trapped and desperate. Blurred, terrified eyes convey his utter horror. Ghostly voices relentlessly whisper "Guruguru," intensifying his claustrophobic fear as he struggles against an unseen force.

His eye peers through a slit, then the horrifying vision fully reveals itself: a dark void filled with distorted, smiling baby faces. Below them, transparent, indistinct adult figures, his deceased relatives, look down. He screams in recognition, "Grandma, she should have died a long time ago!" His hand reaches out, becoming translucent, dissolving into the light. He protests, "Stop it! Other than Asako, they're not my children!" The Storyteller's voice, calm and reassuring, says, "Precious, precious. Don't be afraid."

A white screen, then the sound of a baby's cry, signaling new life. In a bright hospital room, a nurse congratulates Asako, who holds their newborn. The nurse explains the "Guruguru" cycle: "Everyone, once they grow old and their role is over, they become 'Guruguru'. They're connected forever." Asako calmly confirms her husband "entered the 'Guruguru'," completing the cycle.

The title card reappears with a bang, signaling the story's abrupt end. The Yami Shibai credits roll over a changing park scene, transitioning from day to night. As children's faces glow white in the darkness, the clock from the opening melts and breaks. This final imagery leaves a lasting impression of the pervasive, cyclical nature of the tale.
