Karyu seems so tired of being a killer and then she finds Uzume who is basically her mirror image and it makes the whole rivalry feel a bit sad

It gets a bit much with the explicit stuff sometimes, but the movement during that Edo period rooftop chase kept me hooked until the end

The tension when Karyu realized she was not the only professional in the room felt so heavy and seeing her match for match with Uzume was just brutal

The fight scenes in this old ova really surprise with how fluid they are and seeing two kunoichi go at it like that is exactly what you expect from this series

Uzume being a servant but holding her own against Karyu was such a cool twist and the way they clashed in that shop felt so desperate and fast

uzume waiting for karyu on that path was cold and the way she dismantled a professional killer made the title animal road make a lot of sense

the animation for the blade clashing was actually decent for an old ova and uzume is way more skilled than she looks in that dress

how uzume stood her ground against a top assassin was wild, and that animal road segment really turned the tables on who was the predator.

you could tell karyu was getting desperate when she couldn't land a single hit on uzume and that ending in the dark was so gritty

seeing that professional assassin get outplayed by a maid was my favorite bit and the animal road trap was just a downright nasty way to lose

the way karyu realized she was being hunted instead of doing the hunting on that road was a total shift in power and uzume is terrifying

I think Uzume being a servant was the perfect cover because nobody expects a house worker to be that deadly with a blade. Seeing her and Karyu go at it in the middle of the woods was the best part of the episode and the way they use their bodies during the fight is just typical of these older OVAs.

that fight in the forest was way more intense than the first episode and uzume using those wires to pin karyu down was such a dirty move

karyu getting jumped in that alley was nuts and i did not expect uzume to actually have those kinds of skills underneath that servant outfit
artemis's avatar

you really see the difference in how they fight because uzume is so much more brutal and that trap on the animal road caught karyu completely off guard
necrozma's avatar

that transition from a simple assassination to a full on ninja duel was such a trip and uzume using her environment to trap karyu was a smart move and looked great too

karyu shattering that wall was incredible, and i really felt the weight behind every swing when uzume started pushing her back into the courtyard.

the fight was okay but it felt like they spent too much time talking about how ninjas are obsolete now instead of just showing more of that weapon work in the actual battle

watching these two go at it in that merchant house was brutal and karyu really met her match with uzume because that girl is fast and lethal and the music during their clash was perfect

uzume caught me off guard by being a hidden ninja and the way she held her own against karyu was so intense and the animation looked way better than the first episode

EPISODE CONTEXT

Episode 2 of 4 places 'Animal Road' squarely in the rising action of this OVA arc, directly following whatever conflicts and character dynamics were introduced in the premiere. At the midpoint, the series has no room for detours — this episode is expected to drive the central tension forward and position the story for the decisive turns in Episodes 3 and 4. Consider it the pivot where the series shifts from establishing its world to actively testing its characters within it.
