Scum of the Brave Episode 7: Death of a Brave

The episode opens with Kuzu in torment, their body contorting as a monstrous, glowing pink arm manifests. Joe watches, a grim resignation on his face, as Kuzu struggles against this brutal power. The attack misses its intended target, leaving Kuzu anguished and pointing frantically at the menacing Levi, shouting about the enemy's "highest level." Joe, seeing the danger, draws his sword and urges Kuzu to run.

After the unsettling title card, we find Joe desperately holding Kuzu as they hang precariously over a ledge in the pouring rain. Kuzu pleads to be let go, but Joe pulls them to safety, only to dismiss them with harsh words: "Don’t make me do more work. Go." Kuzu, heartbroken, runs into the night, leaving Joe alone in the rain, a grim figure standing by the gate.

As Joe watches Kuzu disappear, Levi emerges from the shadows, confirming Joe's suspicion of being tracked. Levi's purple eyes glow with a chilling focus, revealing their "Ether gear" allows them to track people relentlessly. Despite Joe's warnings about drawing attention, Levi moves with a predatory confidence, undeterred by the potential consequences.

Joe and Levi clash in a swift exchange of blades, Levi's agility meeting Joe's practiced defense. Levi then reveals a hidden pistol, displaying a ruthlessness that shocks Joe. Unexpectedly, Maruta leaps into the fray, enthusiastically proclaiming her loyalty to her "Master" before being quickly dispatched by Levi.

After her brief, embarrassing intervention, Maruta redeems herself by revealing the secret to Levi's tracking: an enhanced sense of smell, or 'olfaction.' Joe, despite his obvious frustration with Maruta's presence, uses this information to his advantage. He acknowledges Levi's strength, and perhaps their unsettling charm, even as he prepares to counter their unique ability.

Joe executes a precise 'Bind' technique, locking swords with Levi and then breaking their stance with a powerful kick. He follows with a series of quick strikes, rendering Levi unconscious and effectively neutralizing their tracking ability. Yet, as Maruta praises his skill, Joe questions Levi's true identity, contemplating a ruthless solution before Kuzu reappears, his transformed arm still glowing.

Kuzu teases Joe about his strength, their playful demeanor at odds with their terrifying power. Maruta scolds Kuzu for trespassing, asserting her and Joe's authority, much to Joe's annoyance. As Joe dismisses them both, a flashback reveals the 'Bind' technique he used, explained by his own "Master." Maruta then expresses profound admiration for Joe's "Master," revealing that her own father held the man in high regard, a revelation that clearly troubles Joe.

Prompted by Maruta's question, Joe recounts the painful story of his "Master": a high school dropout forced into the dangerous "Hero" business by his own ruthless father. This past breeds deep cynicism in Joe's Master, who believes heroism is the 'lowest of the low' and longs only for a world where he can simply exist. The narrative shifts to the death of his friend, Ishinoh, igniting a vengeful fire within him. He vows to become the strongest hero, not for justice, but to make the killers pay and to create a world where such heroes are no longer needed.
