READTHROUGH
Buried in Sand
Subaru Natsuki wakes, half-buried in sand, in a dark cavern. He coughs, disoriented, the claustrophobic space surrounding him. The ribbed pillars resemble a monstrous spine stretching into the unknown, setting an immediate tone of dread. This is not a gentle awakening, but a shock back into a perilous reality.
Ram's Harsh Welcome
Ram sits calmly nearby, her lantern a small beacon against the encroaching shadows. Her greeting is sharp, as always, scolding Subaru for his unconscious state. He struggles to recall the spatial distortion that brought them here, a chaotic event that separated their group. Ram confirms they are trapped deep beneath the sand dunes.
Concern for Rem
Subaru’s anxiety spikes as he questions the whereabouts of Emilia and Beatrice, but especially the unconscious Rem. Ram remains stoic, but her brief glance away hints at her own concern. She dismisses his 'pathetic' behavior, stating their separation was absolute. Subaru’s fear for Rem’s unprotected state is palpable.
Anastasia's Appearance
A rare moment of reassurance comes from Ram, who reveals a faint connection to Rem through their twin bond, confirming she is safe. The immediate panic subsides, and their priority shifts to finding an exit. Then, Anastasia Hoshin, or rather Scarfdona riding Patrasche, arrives. Subaru is overjoyed to see his ground dragon unharmed. Anastasia explains the ominous, heavy energy in the ruins, which feels like a premonition.
Spirits Flee, Miasma Builds
As they trek through the dark halls, Subaru attempts to commune with minor spirits, but they flee in terror. Ram mocks his inability, attributing it to his oppressive contract with Beatrice. Anastasia confirms this, noting the spirits are intimidated. Ram’s constant verbal attacks, coupled with the stifling heat and oppressive mana, begin to fray Subaru's nerves.
The Invisible Door
At a fork, Subaru chooses the right path, citing a psychological theory that baffles his companions. Moments later, a seamless metal wall blocks their way. Subaru insists it is a door, touching it. A surge of mana ripples out, and the 'wall' dissolves, revealing a hidden passage. His unique perception is unsettling, suggesting a deeper connection to the ruins' secrets or a more sinister influence.
Descent into Madness
Patrasche suddenly halts, growling, sensing an unseen threat, but Subaru pushes them forward. He opens a second invisible barrier, his movements jerky, irritability growing. Anastasia explains the high concentration of polluted mana, or 'Shoki', is affecting Subaru's low mana tolerance. Ram watches his struggle with cold contempt, her insults now cutting deep. His hands clench, a surge of irrational anger building within him.
Subaru Snaps
He snaps, slamming his fist into the stone wall, screaming about the unfairness. Ram demands he stop his 'childish tantrum,' questioning his devotion to Emilia and Beatrice. The argument escalates with cruel insults. Ram then attacks his 'love' for Rem, calling it a lie for self-satisfaction. Subaru collapses, clutching his head, the miasma heightening his negative emotions. Ram delivers the final, devastating blow, suggesting Rem would be better off without him. His eyes glow with an eerie, dark light.
The First Kill and Endless Dying
In a fit of madness, Subaru activates Invisible Providence, a shadowy hand erupting from his back. He lunges at Ram, choking her, screaming incoherently. The scene fractures into a montage of bloodshed, Subaru killing Ram and then being killed himself, over and over. Anastasia stands watching, chillingly calm, her eyes reflecting the violence. She offers her hand, and as they touch, a dark distortion ripples. A spear impales Subaru, ending the loop, for now.
The Hungry Horse King's Arena
Subaru wakes again, alone, in a massive, red-lit arena, his body wounded and his mind shattered by the loops. A low rumble shakes the ground, and the Hungry Horse King appears: a massive, flaming mabeast wielding lances. Subaru screams in primal terror, swiftly trampled to death. The arena is a new execution ground, his ordeal far from over.
The Revelation of Shoki
The loop resets, and Subaru vomits, physically rejecting the horrific memories. Ram notes his genuine terror. Anastasia arrives as before, but Subaru is wary. He explains the cycle of madness, and asks Anastasia to re-explain the 'Shoki'. She clarifies it rots the mind and amplifies negative emotions. He realizes his previous actions were due to this corruption, vowing to keep his emotions in check.
Fighting the Miasma, Fighting the Beast
They take the left path, Subaru determined to avoid his previous collapse. He becomes overly polite, trying to hide his internal turmoil, which only makes Ram more suspicious. They encounter the scent of burning flesh, and Subaru falls into the arena. The Hungry Horse King confronts him, lances ready. He struggles, his whip burning, but then Ram and Patrasche dive in. Ram’s 'El Fura' blast gives Subaru an opening, and he uses Invisible Providence to expose the beast. The arena cracks under the combined assault.
Shaula's Interruption
Just as the mabeast prepares a final charge, glowing needles rain down from above, impaling it. Shaula, the tower's guardian, descends gracefully, declaring she has 'found him.' Subaru collapses in exhaustion and shock at the sudden appearance of this mysterious figure. The fight is over, but the enigma of the tower has only deepened.
