Waking in the Sands
Subaru stirs in a dark, sandy cavern, his awakening met by Ram's familiar sharp tongue. She lays out their predicament: separated from the others, likely underground beneath the Augria Sand Dunes due to a spatial distortion. The arrival of Anastasia Hoshin atop Patrasche confirms the isolation, sending a jolt of anxiety through Subaru about Rem. Ram chides his panic, but Anastasia observes that his mere presence keeps Ram anchored, revealing a hidden fragility in the stoic maid.
Ram's Secret Fear
As they navigate the winding tunnels, Anastasia draws Subaru aside, revealing Ram's earlier, frantic panic over Rem's absence and Subaru's unconscious state. Anastasia stresses that Subaru's recovery is Ram's lifeline, a fragile thread preventing her complete collapse. This revelation weighs heavily on Subaru; he now carries the unspoken burden of Ram's emotional stability. He understands the quiet desperation beneath her harsh words.
The Vanishing Wall
Their path is blocked by a massive, seamless wall, yet Subaru instinctively senses its true nature. When he touches it, a magical ripple spreads, and the wall dissolves, revealing a new passage. Ram and Anastasia are taken aback; to them, it was impenetrable rock. They discuss the thick miasma pervading the air, described by Anastasia as mana corrupted by the Witch, corroding mind and body as a defense mechanism for the Sage's tower.
The Miasma's Grip
Deeper into the tunnels, the air thickens, and the light takes on a sickly yellow hue. Subaru begins to feel a heavy, oppressive sensation, his breathing labored. His demeanor shifts, a growing irritability poisoning his words, turning small comments from Ram and Anastasia into perceived slights. He feels an irrational resentment building, a creeping malice born from the miasma's influence, while the others remain unaffected for now.
A Mind Fractured
The miasma finally shatters Subaru's composure. He screams at Ram, accusing her of abandoning Rem, claiming he alone truly cares. When she tries to defend herself, he unleashes his Authority of Sloth, 'Invisible Providence,' smashing the wall beside her. The shadowy hand terrifies both Ram and Anastasia, who witness his malice for the first time. He descends into a nightmarish hallucination, strangling Ram, blaming her for everything, watching her go limp.
Hallucinations of Betrayal
The nightmare continues, distorted and violent. Subaru sees Anastasia stab him with a hidden dagger, her face cold with a smile. He experiences multiple 'deaths' within his mind, witnessing Patrasche devoured and Ram's body broken. The visuals are chaotic, pulsing with aggressive colors, a sensory overload that traps him in a loop of betrayal. Every trusted face becomes a monster, his mind twisted by the corrosive mana.
The Reset
Suddenly, Subaru gasps, 'waking' in the same sandy spot, drenched in cold sweat, his body trembling. He realizes the entire sequence was a mental attack, a miasma-induced hallucination. He forces himself to hide his terror, maintaining distance from Ram and Anastasia, fearing another loss of control. With immense willpower, he pushes through, navigating the tunnels successfully, his mind focused on their objective despite the psychological scars.
Descent to the Watchtower
Guided by a grim intuition, perhaps a subconscious echo of his failed mental loops, Subaru leads the group along a specific, safer path. He remains hyper-vigilant, warning Ram and Anastasia of every hazard. They eventually reach a vertical shaft, where Subaru slips through loose sand, sliding down into a massive, lit arena deep within the earth. He looks up, seeing the circular opening far above, finally at the base of the watchtower.
The Guardian's Attack
In the arena's center stands a terrifying, centaur-like monster of black and red energy. It unleashes high-speed, burning light beams, the dreaded 'Hell's Snipe' that attacked them previously. Subaru dodges desperately, cornered and outmatched. Just as he faces annihilation, Ram and Anastasia descend into the arena. Ram swiftly intervenes with her wind magic, 'El Fura,' deflecting a killing blow and placing herself defiantly between Subaru and the monstrous guardian.
Master and Guardian
The monstrous centaur vanishes in a swirl of fire, replaced by a bubbly, scantily clad young woman with a long ponytail. She drops her hostile posture immediately, beaming as she rushes towards Subaru with extreme familiarity. She calls him 'Master,' completely ignoring Ram and Anastasia, seemingly overjoyed to see him. Subaru is left in utter shock, having never met her. As the credits begin to roll, her name is revealed: Shaula, the watchtower's guardian.
