This episode mostly talks about Chopper’s backstory and the beginning of everything. While the emotional message is already there, it hasn’t reached its most critical point yet. That said, I find Hiriluk to be quite a lovable character.

Expands the backstory with themes of hope and rejection. The narrative becomes deeply personal.

Watching Hiriluk fail at every single medical procedure is hilarious and then it gets heavy when he starts talking about curing the hearts of the people on this frozen island and his dream for the blossoms

I love how Hiriluk told Chopper that being a monster is just a word used by small minded people and then he gave him that pink hat and I just want to protect him forever

I cried so hard when Hiriluk got naked in the snow just to show Chopper he wasn't a threat and that reindeer deserves all the happiness in the world after being treated like a monster for so long

Luffy chasing Chopper around the lab is actually kind of terrifying if you think about it from the little guy's perspective and he just wants to hide but he keeps doing it in reverse which is so funny

Hiriluk is a terrible doctor and he basically poisoned that guy green but his talk about the skull being a symbol of conviction makes you want to root for him anyway

Chopper crying while he eats that bread and milk was the most relatable thing ever because you can tell he never had anyone be nice to him before

Luffy is so persistent about recruiting the reindeer and it feels a bit weird while we are watching this depressing backstory but his energy is actually kind of sweet

Kureha is usually so mean and scary but seeing her look so sad while Hiriluk explains his cherry blossom dream shows how much she actually respects him

The scene where Chopper gets his name and that pink hat is the first time he ever felt like he belonged anywhere and it really hurts knowing what happens next

I am still thinking about those lines Hiriluk said about the eyes of an eagle and the voice that tears the sky, because it sounds like he was hinting at something way bigger than just a medical cure.

Hiriluk is a complete mess of a doctor and he almost killed that guy with the frog medicine, but the way he treats Chopper like a son is so beautiful. It was hard watching him throw stuff and scream at the poor reindeer just to force him to leave when he found out he was terminal. Kureha being the one to look after him is a great twist.

Seeing Hiriluk cough up blood after he chased Chopper away broke my heart because I finally understood he was just trying to protect the kid

That old doctor is a total fraud who turns people green but the way he talks about the pirate flag as a symbol of faith is something else

I can't believe how much Hiriluk cared about that little reindeer and it actually made me tear up when he stripped down in the snow just to prove he wasn't a threat

Seeing Hiriluk stand in the snow totally naked just to prove he was a doctor who wanted to help was such a powerful moment and it makes it obvious why Chopper trusted him

I definitely didn't expect the quack doctor to be the one who teaches us about the skull and crossbones being a symbol of faith and it really adds a lot of meaning to why luffy cares so much about his flag

It is so wild how this show goes from luffy acting like a total weirdo chasing a reindeer around to one of the most depressing backstories ever and seeing Hiriluk cough up blood on the balcony after forcing Chopper to leave was a total gut punch and now everyone just wants to see him succeed with his cherry blossom dream for the country

EPISODE CONTEXT

This episode follows the reveal of Chopper's secret on Drum Island, pivoting into the backstory that gives his character real emotional weight. It deepens the audience's connection to Chopper by exploring the relationship that defined his worldview before the Straw Hats arrived. The groundwork laid here directly feeds into the next episode's continuation of Dr. Hiriluk's legacy and its lasting impact on Chopper's choices moving forward.
