Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Episode 54: Beyond the Inferno

In a grim flashback to the Ishval Civil War, Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye stand amidst the ruins, their faces etched with the horrors they enacted. Roy speaks of changing the country, a promise Riza seems to hold him to. She reveals the flame alchemy notes tattooed on her back, her father's dangerous legacy, begging Roy to destroy the knowledge. Mustang reluctantly agrees, taking on her burden and her father's, a heavy weight for a new future.

Back in the present, Riza Hawkeye navigates Central's dark tunnels, searching for Roy Mustang. She encounters a figure, seemingly the Colonel, but his demeanor feels wrong. Riza, ever sharp, baits him with a reference to a private understanding. When the imposter, Envy, uses her first name, she knows his deception, stating that the true Colonel only does so when they are utterly alone. The homunculus sheds his disguise, a malevolent smirk on his face, ready to strike.

Envy lunges at Riza, who fires relentlessly, but the homunculus regenerates easily. Just as he prepares a lethal strike, a massive fire blast erupts, forcing him back. Roy Mustang appears, his face a mask of cold fury, hand poised to snap again. He demands to know what Envy is doing to his lieutenant, his voice a dangerous tremor. Mustang then begins a brutal assault, igniting fluids in Envy's eyes and tongue, preventing transformation. Envy screams, trying to take the form of Maes Hughes, but Roy is unswayed. "The real Hughes is dead," he states, delivering an even larger pillar of fire, his rage palpable.

Envy is reduced to his pathetic, true form, a small creature scuttling for mercy. Roy Mustang looms, foot raised, hand ready for the final incineration. Just as he is about to end it, Riza Hawkeye draws her pistol and points it at the back of Roy's head. She tells him it is enough, stating she will handle the homunculus's disposal, desperate to save Roy from being consumed by his own hatred.

Edward Elric and Scar arrive, with Ed quickly snatching up the tiny Envy to keep Roy from killing him. Roy's fury turns on Ed, threatening to burn his hand, but Ed stands firm, refusing to let his friend become a monster. Scar joins, questioning if this face of rage is what Roy intends to show as a leader. They challenge Roy's narrow vision, suggesting a ruler driven by hate would only create more suffering.

The words from his friends and former enemy finally pierce Roy Mustang's rage. He remembers Maes Hughes's advice about protecting loved ones. Roy sees that his pursuit of Envy turned him into the very monster he swore to defeat. He lowers his hand, admitting his foolishness, his body language shifting to defeat and repentance. Riza keeps her gun aimed until the darkness passes, finally lowering it with a mix of relief and sadness. Mustang apologizes to Riza for placing her in such a position and for his reckless actions, the emotional scars remaining raw.

Envy breaks his silence with a venomous rant, attempting to incite chaos by dredging up past sins, including Scar's murder of Winry's parents and the Ishvalan massacres. He mocks human bonds, calling them pathetic, but Edward Elric quietly delivers a devastating observation. Ed realizes Envy's hatred stems from his deep jealousy of humans, their ability to form bonds and recover from failure. Humiliated by a "pipsqueak" human seeing through him, Envy cries out in shame, extracts his Philosopher's Stone, and crumbles into ash, committing suicide.

The scene shifts to Central Command, where Alex and Olivier Armstrong battle the powerful Sloth. Central soldiers turn their weapons on Olivier, but their conflict is interrupted by horrific mannequin soldiers. These pale, mindless creatures swarm from every opening, attacking indiscriminately. Olivier, ever the commander, takes charge, ordering the Central soldiers to fight for their lives alongside the Armstrongs against the new monstrosities.

Alex Armstrong engages Sloth in a test of pure strength, using his boxing alchemy against the homunculus's massive speed and weight. During the struggle, Alex dislocates his shoulder, but he grits his teeth, slams it back into place against a wall in a shower of alchemical sparks. He proclaims his strength and art are an incomparable combination, delivering a powerful uppercut. Olivier supports from the sidelines, slicing through mannequin soldiers attempting to interfere with her brother's duel.

Outside Central Command, defenses crumble under a new assault. A woman in a simple white coat, Izumi Curtis, walks through shelling and gunfire, effortlessly destroying artillery with her alchemy. She reaches the main gate and, with a single clap, transmutes stone and metal into twisted wreckage, clearing a path. Soldiers are terrified by her overwhelming power as she steps through the dust and smoke of the breach.

Izumi Curtis famously introduces herself as a "housewife" to the stunned soldiers, then presses deeper into the command center. Far below, Van Hohenheim walks through a forest of massive, pulsing pipes, the heart of Central's alchemical network. He reaches a throne where Father sits, hooked into the machinery. The two identical men face each other, Hohenheim addressing Father as the "dwarf in the flask," setting the stage for their final confrontation.
