It is his father, Van Hohenheim, and Edward does not greet him with words. Instead, he unleashes a powerful automail punch, a silent, furious declaration of years of abandonment.

Night falls, casting long shadows over the impromptu campfire where Hohenheim finally speaks. He reveals the terrible truth: a total solar eclipse is imminent, and Father plans to use its power for a country-wide transmutation. Then, Hohenheim offers himself, his own life force, his Philosopher's Stone, for his sons' bodies. Edward's response is pure, righteous fury, rejecting the use of souls, even his father's, for their salvation.

Back in the present, Edward transmutes a new red cloak, complete with the Flamel symbol, a defiant act of self-reassertion. He insists he wants to fight his final battle in style, though the bravado barely masks his determination. He offers his allies a chance to leave, but Greed and the chimeras, Darius and Heinkel, are resolute. As they head into the encroaching forest, Edward glances back, perhaps at his father, but then fixes his gaze forward.

Far from the main group, General Grumman surveys the wreckage of a train explosion, the search for King Bradley ongoing. Major Miles expresses concern for Bradley's survival, but Grumman's skepticism is palpable. He states he will stay, observing the search, rather than proceeding to Central. His true thoughts, revealed in an internal monologue, lay bare a cold, calculating pragmatism: let others do the dirty work, then step in to restore order and take control.

Deep in the dark forest, Edward senses a familiar presence, confirmed by Ling's homunculus detection. Out from the trees steps Alphonse's armor. Edward's initial joy turns to horror as Ling warns him away; the Alphonse they know is not there. Pride speaks through the armor, unleashing shadow tendrils, mocking Greed and Ling's shared consciousness. The sight of his brother's body being used as a weapon ignites Edward's righteous anger.

Edward transmutes a stone wall, but Pride's shadows slice through it with terrifying ease. He taunts Edward, reminding him that he is needed alive but limbs are expendable. A sudden realization dawns on Edward: Pride's shadows need light. He whispers a plan, then unleashes a massive alchemy surge, his hands glowing. The transmutation targets the town's power grid, plunging the entire area into absolute darkness. Back at his campfire, Van Hohenheim looks up, understanding the drastic move his son has made.

In the sudden, total blackness, Pride's shadows vanish, leaving him blind and powerless. Edward and Ling use their other senses to reposition. Heinkel transforms into his lion-man form, his eyes glowing as he hunts Pride's true body, Selim Bradley. He finds the small, vulnerable figure, exposed without his powers. Heinkel lunges, slamming Selim against a rock, driven by an animal instinct to kill the homunculus before his terrifying abilities can return.

Elsewhere in the darkened forest, Darius and Edward search for their allies, the sounds of fighting echoing faintly. A heavy, wet sniffing sound heralds Gluttony's arrival, his silhouette barely visible. He can smell the "Fullmetal Alchemist" and Greed, his nose an unhindered weapon in the gloom. Ling Yao realizes Gluttony tracked them earlier and now has a distinct advantage. He asks Greed to take control, asserting his superior martial arts and detection skills are needed for this blind battle.

Ling engages Gluttony in a blur of movement, his saber striking the massive homunculus in the darkness. Gluttony, frustrated and unable to see his agile opponent, prepares to unleash his void-like absorption power, his chest splitting open to reveal a maw of teeth. But before he can strike, a masked figure descends from the trees. It is Lan Fan, her new automail arm ending in a deadly blade. She delivers a devastating slash across Gluttony's chest, standing protectively before Ling, her return a decisive turning point.
