Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Episode 2: The First Day

The red curtain parts on Winry Rockbell, Pinako Rockbell, and their dog Den. Pinako holds a sign, flat-faced, declaring Winry a "Heroine." Winry screams, grabs the sign, and runs off, trailed by Den. It is a quick, sharp opening that announces this is not the serious show, setting a tone of irreverence.

Alphonse Elric fixes a radio with alchemy for a customer, who marvels, "Amazing! It looks better than when I bought it!" But Alphonse cannot stop. He transmutes the entire shop into a flashy, neon spectacle. The shopkeeper himself becomes a "pretty boy" holding a rose, a final, absurd flourish.

Nina Tucker explains her mother's departure to Edward and Alphonse. Her mother left because Shou Tucker didn't make enough gold, she had an affair, stole his money, and even tried poison. She "said that he had a mediocre face and that he wasn't tall enough for her." Shou Tucker then sobs, revealing he "had no choice but to transmute her with the dog and turn her into a chimera!" Ed and Al are left in horrified silence.

Scar appears before Roy Mustang, Major Armstrong, and Riza Hawkeye. They ignore his menace, speculating on his appearance. Mustang asks, "Did someone mace Bob Barker?" Armstrong suggests a tanning bed. Scar, infuriated, shouts, "I'm an Ishvalan, you idiots! Don't ever forget it!"

Winry waves goodbye from her balcony to Ed, Al, and Armstrong. Al and Armstrong are touched, but Ed sees the truth. It is a mechanical arm holding a cutout of Winry, activated by a timer. The real Winry sleeps soundly in her bed, having built a robot to perform her farewells. "Rockbell Studios presents the 'Come Back Soon' time-activated robot!" the screen announces.

Hiromu Arakawa's cow persona dances as credits roll. The animation is simple, rhythmic, and fun. The scene then transitions back to the theater stage, the red curtains closing. The 4-Koma logo appears, signaling the end.
