framing a recap episode around a posthumous message left by a recently deceased character is a clever structural choice that gives redundant footage genuine narrative purpose. it recontextualizes earlier events as curated memories rather than replayed scenes, making the format feel earned rather than lazy and uninspired.

After what had happened in the previous episode, another suprising event arises. Is this really the end for mind games or maybe the start of one again unrealistic colission of higher being's minds. One may feel mixed emotions but still good enough.

Basic recap episode, can't believe so much has happened in this show.
The ending got me sad, though.
No one here to match his freak no more lol

This episode feels like a reset after everything that came before. The tone shifts, and the absence of a key presence is immediately felt. Watch as the slower pace carefully sets the stage for what’s next.

A fast paced recap unfolds the tale till now. All obstacles being gone, Light feels it is boring to go on. Others suggested he should continue the investigation as L. On the other hand, Light shows Ryuk the creation of his new world. New characters are expected to be introduced soon.

It feels strangely quiet without L around. With his biggest rival gone, Light can finally focus fully on his original goal. The atmosphere changes a lot, and it almost feels like a new phase of the story starting.

This episode is a slower, recap-heavy reset after L’s death. The tone turns cold as Light Yagami becomes the “New L” while ruling as Kira. The 5-year time skip sets a darker era. Not thrilling, but crucial for the next battle to begin. Recap was unnecessary.

This episode is a big recap, but seeing Light finally take L's place is chilling. He’s now the "New L" and Kira at the same time. He has total control of the world. But really was recap necessary

This feature depicts the terrifying truth of light reigning without L's intervention. The entire planet submits to Kira. It sets the stage for a new era of horror while summarizing their epic conflict. The monarch is sitting on his throne, but Wammy's house shadows are beginning

Is the recap really necessary 😭 I want a quick emotional release, not a recap I don't care... I'm just upset. The entire sound of the show has changed, slower pacing, quieter music and everything feels more deliberate.

first half is literally a recap ep so yeah you can skip that part. second half picks up with a 5 year time skip and Light being Light. necessary watch for the transition but not exactly exciting

Too bad the series eventually went in this direction. Post-timeskip Death Note just screams lazy writing, and it's no wonder a lot of people echo the same sentiment.

Definition of a middle episode that slows down a bit compared to the last one. It’s less shocking but still keeps you interested.

Disappointing after that cliffhanger. Can skip. Filler

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting at the two-thirds mark of the series, 'Renewal' is a definitive turning point that follows the seismic fallout of 'Silence' and marks the transition into Death Note's final act. The episode introduces new characters and reconfigures existing alliances, essentially resetting the strategic battlefield that will define the remaining eleven episodes. Everything established here — the new dynamics, the fresh adversaries, the shifted power balance — serves as the foundation for the endgame ahead.
