Mao then confronts a suspicious policeman, using a talisman to reveal him as a large, red-eyed bear demon. Mao swiftly dispatches the demon with his katana, displaying his formidable power. Afterwards, Otome notices Mao's torn clothes, and as he changes, deep claw-like scars across his back are revealed, hinting at his own battles and a hidden curse.

Mao elaborates on the 'Kodoku', describing it as a deadly curse born from the last survivor of venomous creatures, capable of killing its target.
