But after watching it, I completely understand why everyone is so excited about this title.

The Japanese-style Cinderella story: Endless wars in the name of love

Before diving any further into this post, I want to give a quick heads-up. While I understand everyone's concerns about spoilers, this post will contain quite a few, as we will be going deep into the story. The Ogre's Bride actually originated as a light novel and has both a manga and a live-action movie adaptation. However, in this post, we won't be touching on those, we'll be focusing almost entirely on the anime. So, for those who want to avoid spoilers, please stop here!

I've watched three episodes of The Ogre's Bride, and I feel that the story itself is actually quite simple, it's a purely beautiful love story. Unlike any shonen romance anime you've ever watched, this title is josei/shoujo (女子向け), made specifically for a female audience. It is a truly pure romance, without complicated plots or goofy comedy.

You may wonder why such a pure love story is getting so much attention on the internet and why people are so eager to discuss it. It's because on top of the beautiful romance, The Ogre's Bride also shows us wars between powerful families. In this world, elite clans rule, and now they are fighting each other for the ones they love.

Don't get me wrong, as I said, this isn't a shonen anime. The fights here aren't like the ones in One Piece, Naruto, or Bleach; I'd say they are much more grounded. Even though this world features Ayakashi, fox demons, and ogres, you won't find typical shonen battle scenes. For better or worse, it skips those high-energy fights entirely. So, if you're feeling burned out by standard shonen action, this might be right up your alley.

The Meaning of The Ogre's Bride: The Relationship Between Humans and Non-Humans

Unlike typical shoujo or romance titles, the world of The Ogre's Bride includes not only humans, but also Ayakashi, a term from Japanese folklore used to describe supernatural monsters, spirits, and phenomena. In the past, the Ayakashi didn't really interfere in the human world, but after humans ruined their own environment, everything changed.

Since Ayakashi are immortal beings with superpowers, they successfully rebuilt the human world, making it an even better place. After that, they gained immense status in human society, occasionally choosing human women to be their brides. It might sound strange, but in this world, women adore and admire the Ayakashi, and becoming an Ayakashi's bride is their ultimate dream.

It might seem like marriages between humans and Ayakashi are just business transactions, but Ayakashi are actually actively searching for true soulmates. According to Episode 3 of The Ogre's Bride, a bride isn't taken as some kind of tribute; to an Ayakashi, a bride represents their ideal partner, someone they genuinely choose to spend the rest of their life with.

While it is certainly positive that humans and Ayakashi live and build society together, it has also created a very realistic problem: social stratification. People have started looking down on ordinary humans while worshipping the elite classes. The Ayakashi may have rebuilt the human world, but their presence has also widened social divides, even causing family members to turn against each other.

The Journey of Shinonome Yuzu: A Beautiful Transformation from Ordinary Girl to the Ogre's Bride

We don't know the exact number of Ayakashi in existence, but many human women have been chosen as their brides, including Shinonome Karin, the younger sister of our main character, Shinonome Yuzu. Yuzu is a pitied girl with snobbish parents who have mistreated her ever since she was a young child.

Yuzu's parents always favored Karin, even when Yuzu was young and sick. There was one time Yuzu was terribly ill, but her parents didn't even care about her; they only focused on Karin and fulfilled her every wish. Now, even though Yuzu has grown up, things have only gotten worse. Ever since Karin actually found an Ayakashi husband, her parents focus on Karin even more and treat Yuzu like a total nuisance.

Yuzu has a terrible life, but what makes it even worse is the world's deep social stratification. No one is willing to help or even care about Yuzu, simply because she is an ordinary girl. On top of being abused by her parents, her boyfriend abandons her in Episode 1. People in this world just don't care about the ordinary, they only obsess over the Ayakashi and the elite class.

Although I understand the characters' logic in this world, it honestly feels terrible to watch how everyone treats Yuzu, her sister treats her like a nobody and constantly bullies her. It really hurts to see Yuzu get mistreated by everyone around her, which is why I felt so happy for her when she met her Ogre, Kiryūin Reiya. Reiya truly loves her and treats her like a precious treasure; no one has ever treated Yuzu this way before. After seeing everything Reiya has done for her, I felt relieved that Yuzu is finally getting the love and happiness she deserves.

The wars among families: When love drives everyone crazy

While The Ogre's Bride is mainly focused on the beautiful love story between Shinonome Yuzu and Kiryūin Reiya, it has also shown us wars between families. This world has social stratification, so normally lower classes won't fight with those of higher classes, which also means that usually there will be no one who stands against Reiya.

The Kiryūin family is the highest-ranking and most influential bloodline of all Ayakashi. Since Reiya is the heir, he is someone who truly stands at the very top of this world. Normally, Reiya wouldn't go out of his way to pick fights with other families, nor would they dare pick fights with him. But love has driven these Ayakashi crazy, sparking conflict as they fight for the ones they love.

Although Reiya looks cool and stands at the top of the world, he is also immature in a cute way. After finding out about the terrible things Yuzu went through, he immediately starts picking fights with other Ayakashi, and even declares war on them. For those of us who want Yuzu to finally be happy, it feels warm and satisfying to see how well Reiya treats her, but his actions have also dragged her into countless conflicts.

Yuzu's sister, Shinonome Karin, truly hates her and refuses to accept that Yuzu is living a better life, so she is planning to stir up more trouble in the coming episodes. While Reiya is more than capable of fighting back and protecting Yuzu to the end, it will still be deeply painful for Yuzu, as she is forced to witness just how cruel her own blood relatives can be.
